Coconut – Roasted Gram Dal Chutney

Coconut – roasted gram dal chutney is the most commonly prepared side dish for idli, dosa, pongal etc. This is a very easy and basic recipe that can be prepared very fast.

Grated Coconut: 1 cup

Roasted Gram Dal: 3-4 tablespoons

Green Chillis: 5 (as per taste)

Coriander Leaves: 2-3 sprigs (Optional)

Salt: as per taste

Oil: 1 tablespoon

Urad Dal: 1 teaspoon

Chana Dal: 1 teaspoon

Mustard Seeds: 1/2 teaspoon

Curry Leaves: 1 twig

Water: as needed

1. Grind grated coconut, green chillis, roasted gram dal, coriander leaves, salt and little water into a smooth paste or until you achieve desired consistency.

2. Heat oil in a kadai. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.

3. Add urad dal, chana dal and curry leaves. Saute till dals turn brown.­­

4. Remove tempering from heat and pour over ground coconut paste. Combine well and serve with idli or dosa.
